20 ACC-LA Medical Assistant Students Volunteer at Arroyo Family Health Fair

August 12, 2019

Twenty medical assistant students from American Career College-Los Angeles embarked on a field trip this August to the Children’s Health Fair, sponsored by the Arroyo Family Health Center.

Led by ACC-Los Angeles education assistant director Jamison Wallington, MA lead instructor Mary-Sue McPetrie and Career Services specialist Jason Stoll, the students helped with patient registration, filling out patient history forms as well as being paired up with LA County nurses to help check vital signs, glucose monitoring, height, weight, blood pressure, hearing and vision checks.

"This opportunity provided the students with a reality check for the career they are entering by dealing with patients of all ages and backgrounds, building on soft skills used to deal with disgruntled patients and how to properly handle on-the-spot patient questions regarding their health, ACC-Los Angeles Student Services coordinator Ruthy Rodriguez said. "It was a great day of learning that left an impression on all that volunteered to help."
