ACC-Los Angeles Valedictorian Overcame Adversity to Graduate at the Top of Her Class

October 16, 2024

Nisha S. has become a shining example of G.R.I.T. and success, recently earning the title of valedictorian at American Career College’s Los Angeles campus. Her story is one of determination and triumph, marked by personal challenges that she overcame to achieve her lifelong goal.

Nisha S. was recently awarded a $5,000 scholarship in a nationwide competition hosted by the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). This prestigious recognition underscores her dedication to academic excellence, but it’s her personal journey that truly resonates and inspires others.

Years ago, Nisha faced a life-altering event while serving in the military. She was involved in a tragic car accident that left her with severe injuries, including a fractured pelvis, a ruptured bladder, a collapsed lung, and a significant spinal injury. Her recovery process was long and challenging, involving extensive physical therapy and a year in a wheelchair. Despite these immense obstacles, Nisha never lost sight of her goal to pursue a career in healthcare.

“I’m really proud of myself,” Nisha shared. “It’s been quite a while since I’ve been in school, so I had no idea I would be able to have the study habits. I’m extremely proud of myself.”

Throughout her studies, she maintained top grades, achieving straight A’s and standing out as a student ambassador. Her contributions to her school community helped her earn the title of valedictorian — an honor she still finds surprising.

“I had some classmates that were also straight-A students, so I wasn’t sure,” Nisha said. “I think that my contributions as an ambassador is what took it over the edge.”

On graduation day, she was surrounded by her family — including her brother from Washington, her sister from Las Vegas, her three daughters, and many other loved ones — and she felt a deep sense of pride and accomplishment. Crossing the stage to receive her diploma was not just a celebration of her academic success but also the fulfillment of her desire to make a difference in the lives of others.

“I always wanted to be in a career where I can help other people,” Nisha explained. “Helping to save lives and make a difference in others’ lives is a really big deal for me.”
