Overcoming Challenges and Finding Success at ACC-OC's Medical Assistant Program

September 25, 2024

Embarking on a fulfilling career journey often entails navigating through obstacles, surprises, and moments of self-discovery. For Jenna H., a graduate of the Medical Assistant program at American Career College-Orange County, it was a tale of resilience, encouragement, and the pursuit of her aspirations.

Jenna's introduction to ACC-Orange County happened as she drove past the campus daily and was drawn to the inviting vibe portrayed by the billboards. The initial impression of a place dedicated to assisting students and fostering a sense of belonging resonated with her.

"I sensed that I could be part of something, they were so willing to assist me and genuinely focused on student well-being; it made me feel like I found my place," Jenna recalled.

During her time in the program, Jenna discovered that the supportive community surpassed her expectations. She particularly cherished the opportunity to form bonds with her peers.

As a program ambassador, Jenna cherished the opportunity to assist others on their paths, a role that strengthened her connections and enriched her journey.

The bonds Jenna cultivated extended beyond her peers, including the instructors and staff at ACC-OC, who played a role in her achievements by offering encouragement and guidance at moments. Jenna speaks warmly of Miss Jimenez, her instructor, whose unwavering support and words of encouragement kept her motivated.

"She always reminded me, 'Jenna, you're doing great,' which gave me the push I needed," Jenna said, underscoring the significance of having a support network.

Jenna's path wasn't without its challenges. Initially, she started in a nursing program but encountered obstacles that led her to switch to the MA program at ACC-OC. Despite these setbacks, Jenna found the strength to persevere, driven by the desire to set a positive example for her family.

"I wanted to do something hands-on, something that made a difference," she explained. With the support of her family and the ACC-OC community, Jenna was able to overcome these hurdles and achieve her goals.

Now working as a medical assistant, Jenna is gearing up to enter nursing school, taking a step forward in her career. The education and skills acquired at ACC-OC have empowered her to move with confidence and be equipped to tackle the upcoming challenges. For Jenna, this journey signifies more than career progression; it embodies creating a future for her family and unlocking her potential.

“Just keep your head up and do it. Don't be scared,” she said in encouragement to future MA cohorts. “Things get in your way, like obstacles, but it doesn't mean it's the end of your road. I had a few struggles along the way, but I didn't allow them to stop me. I just kept going. I looked for support, I found the resources that I needed, and I found the drive to get everything done that I knew I wanted to accomplish.”
