Online Career Training: How It Works and What to Expect

April 20, 2026

Not everyone can make it to campus five days a week. If you have other commitments, online programs can offer the flexibility you need to train for a career without putting your life on hold. In the healthcare field, online career training usually blends virtual coursework with real-world learning opportunities designed to fit your schedule.

This guide will walk you through what to expect in online career training programs, how they work, and tips for success.

Why Consider Healthcare Career Training Online?

Some people want to go to school, but can’t make in-person classes work with their schedules. Online programs offer a way to train for healthcare careers while continuing to work, care for family, or manage other commitments.

Some benefits of online learning include:

  • Flexible scheduling: Are you a morning person? A night owl? An online program lets you study when you’re most productive.
  • Accessible learning: In an online program, you can learn from anywhere with WiFi, whether you’re at home, in a cafe, or out of town.
  • Digital resources: Online career training programs provide access to digital resources, like video lectures, audio books, and discussion boards.
  • Virtual support: Many online programs offer virtual chatrooms or office hours where students can connect with other classmates and ask questions.

What to Expect in an Online Career Training Program

An online program might look a little different from in-person instruction, but it offers the same opportunity for learning. Here’s what you can expect when starting an online career program in healthcare:

Length

The length of an online career program depends on your field of study and the credential you’re targeting. For example, most of ACC’s healthcare diploma programs are offered in a blended format (combining online and in-person instruction) and take less than 1 year to complete.

Unlike traditional colleges, online programs may allow you to start at various times during the year. That means you may not have to wait until the fall or spring semester to enroll. For example, ACC’s Medical Assistant program has monthly start dates throughout the year, so you can begin learning in a blended format whenever you’re ready.

Structure

In an online training program, you complete all your coursework virtually, but the structure can vary. Your classes may include:

  • Synchronous learning: With this format, you attend classes virtually, but in real time. You participate in live discussions with your instructors and classmates.
  • Asynchronous learning: This model allows you to complete classes on your own time and turn in assignments within a specified timeframe.
  • Both synchronous and asynchronous learning: Some online programs include a mix of learning types, giving you both flexibility and connection.
  • Blended learning: Blended programs integrate online learning with hands-on instruction, allowing students to apply what they’ve learned in a real-world setting.

Most online programs organize coursework into learning units, or modules. For example, ACC’s online Medical Billing and Coding Specialist program includes seven 72-hour modules (not including 130 hours of online real-world experience) that you can complete on your own schedule.

Technology

When you’re learning virtually, it’s essential to have access to reliable technology. This typically includes a computer or laptop, a stable internet connection, and specific software. ACC has certain technological requirements for online learning including:

  • Speakers and microphone or headset
  • Webcam
  • Power cord or charger
  • High-speed internet

We also provide all students with free access to Microsoft Office 365. Some programs may require other types of software for readings, quizzes, and exams.

Self-Paced Learning

Compared to fully in-person classes, online programs offer more flexibility to learn at your own pace. While you’ll still have deadlines for assignments, you can complete readings and watch lectures when it’s most convenient for you.

This self-paced learning style means you’ll need to hold yourself accountable for managing your course load and meeting all program deadlines. Online learning requires discipline and motivation, but it can be well worth the effort.

Blended Instruction

Many online career training schools offer blended instruction, which combines online classes with hands-on training. This blended format gives you the opportunity to apply what you’ve learned in real-world settings. This experience is essential in fields like healthcare, which requires clinical training and practice.

The following ACC programs are offered in a blended format:

  • Dental Assisting (Weekend classes available!)
  • Medical Assistant (Weekend classes available!)
  • Optical Technician (Evening classes available!)
  • Pharmacy Technician (Weekend classes available!)
  • Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
  • Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA)
  • Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA)
  • Radiography
  • Respiratory Therapy
  • Surgical Technology

Tips for Succeeding in an Online Career Training Program

If you’re considering an online program, here are some tips to help you balance school with your other commitments and responsibilities:

  • Build a study routine. Set aside time for studying and stick to this schedule as much as possible. When you have a dedicated study routine, it becomes easier to stay on top of coursework and assignments.
  • Keep track of assignments. Choose a system for tracking your projects and assignments, like a digital calendar or a physical planner.
  • Have a dedicated study space. Find a quiet place where you can focus and be productive. Your study space can be a room in your house, or it might be a comfortable spot at a library or coffee shop.
  • Practice balance. Don’t forget to make time for yourself. Find time to rest, do some self-care, and participate in activities you enjoy.
