Jovana's journey to a career in healthcare was anything but conventional. At just 20 years old, she faced a life-changing moment—becoming a mother. Originally studying criminology and criminal justice at Sarino Valley College while playing soccer, Jovana had dreams of becoming a detective. However, her priorities shifted when she realized that her career choice might not be the best fit for raising a child.
“I got pregnant at 20 years old,” she said. “I knew that having a career as a detective wouldn’t be the best for my child, so I started researching other options.” That search led her to ACC, where she found a structured program that allowed her to balance motherhood, work, and education.
While the transition wasn’t easy, Jovana remained steadfast in her goal to create a better future for her son. “It’s hectic. It’s not draining, but it definitely takes a toll,” she admitted. “There are days when I question whether I should get up and go to school or just stay home with my son. But I manage my time.”
Jovana credits ACC for giving her the support and motivation she needed. The structured nine-month program helped her stay on track, and she found encouragement in the school’s community. “From day one, when we started learning skills, the structured calendar helped me see that I was making progress,” she said.
As she prepares to graduate and continue her studies in the LVN program, Jovana remains committed to her ultimate goal: providing for her child. “Just thinking in the back of my head that I’m doing this for my son” is what keeps her going.
Her advice to others who may be hesitant about starting their own journey? “Click apply. Take that step. It’s worth it in the end.”
