For Richard G., graduation from American Career College’s Los Angeles campus wasn’t just about walking across a stage — it was about proving something to himself.
“Honestly, I have no idea how I’m going to feel. I might cry,” Richard said with a laugh before the ceremony at Toyota Arena. “It’s a bit of a mix of emotions, excitement and accomplishment.”
Richard's journey through ACC’s Optical Technician program wasn’t an easy one. He commuted nearly two hours each way from Ventura County, braving Southern California traffic and even surviving a July heatwave without air conditioning.
“My AC compressor went out and I’m sitting in traffic on the 101 (freeway),” he recalled. “It was (tough) but it was worth it.”
Richard originally came to ACC considering surgical technology program, but during a campus tour, he discovered the optics program and instantly clicked with it. By his second month, he had started working at an optical dispensary.
The accelerated structure of ACC's programs and the dedication of its faculty played a major role in his success.
“ACC helped me tremendously, especially with unlimited lab hours after class,” he said. “(My instructors) were always there for one-on-one support.”
Now a certified optical technician with real-world experience, Richard encourages future students to take the leap.
“If you’re hesitant, just do it. Tomorrow’s not promised,” he said. “It’s totally worth it. Especially optics at the LA campus. Number one program in the school.”
